History

The Southwestern Philosophy of Education Society first met in 1950 at Southern Methodist University sponsored by Glen Hoskins. The first President was Charles Flinn Arrowood from the University of Texas. The purpose of the meetings is to encourage scholarly research in the philosophy and history of education. Graduate students are encouraged to participate and many have gotten their first opportunity to present papers at these meetings. Annual meetings have been held continuously since 1950. The Proceedings published the papers presented at those meetings.

As the organization grew with the addition of graduate students who participated in SWPES finding teaching positions in other parts of the country, new members moving into the region and existing members moving to universities outside the region, southwestern no longer seemed to apply. To reflect the more national nature of the organization, the name was changed to the Society of Philosophy and History of Education

Publication

The Journal of History and Philosophy of Education is the annual publication of the Society and is made up of papers selected from presentations at the annual meeting. Papers included in the Journal are collected by the editor and evaluated by the members of the editorial board. The editor of JOPHE since 1995 is David Snelgrove.
